Our top tips to excel in Science

Key concepts and definitions

The first thing students should try to accomplish when studying is understanding the key concepts and definitions. For example, using quizlet or physical cue cards. Being able to retrieve memory on the spot will boost your confidence for your exams since you will have no notes available to you. A tutor can help you make these cue cards and practise using them.

Understanding the relevance to the world

Science is all about what is happening in the world around us. If you are struggling to understand some concepts, then an easy thing to do is to try and relate it back to your own experiences. For example, melting/freezing water in chemistry or simply looking into what genetic traits you have from your parents. All in all, knowing this information and developing an understanding of how it all works around you will be a great tool for remembering key ideas.

Writing for NCEA

NCEA may seem a little daunting in your first year and you may be wondering what the markers are looking for. First thing to remember is to give a definition or a formula at the start of your answer. If you are stuck on answering exam questions, you can look at past exam answers through the StudyTime page. A great way for revision is to practise past exams under exam conditions. Afterwards, you can compare your answers to the excellence exemplar which can help you recognise the areas you need to work on. A tutor can help you break down the questions and figure out the specifics that the examiner is looking for.
