Learning how to answer explain questions using formulas

It is a given that you will be asked to explain a concept, and sometimes they are questions you have never come across before. Understanding how to navigate your formula sheet and use formulas to answer questions means that you have a really solid starting point. Formulas are great for showing how things are proportional or inversely proportional and this is often the core part of the explain questions.

Watching out for NCEA's sneaky tricks in the questions

Learn to read the questions thoroughly! By the time you get to level 3, NCEA likes to trick you. Whether it be by putting the information in different units, asking to give the answer in radians rather than degrees, or asking you to work out the spring constant of only 1 spring. Ensuring you are using all the correct information can be the difference between getting merit or excellence on the question!

Avoid illusions of learning while studying

It is really easy to sit a practise test with the answers open on the next tab. It is really important that you practice under exam questions. Skipping the merit and achieve questions that you  ‘know how to do’ can be useful sometimes but it doesn’t teach you to check that you are using the right units and watch out for tricks and mistakes. It is also really easy to just read the excellence explanation questions and think you ‘would have written that’  but there is no substitute for actually writing the answer down and checking to see you have all the right points afterward. Self-generation is crucial to learning.
