Our top tips to excel in Physics
Know the Formulas
A significant part of NCEA physics is using formulas in calculations. Before the exam you should ensure you know what each formula is used for, and what each letter and symbol in the formula represents. It’s also useful to print off the formula sheet before the exam and practice finding the formula you want. Tutoring can involve going through the formula sheet with students, making sure they know what each formula is used for and practicing them in questions.
Use Keywords in Answers
Often physics is a balance between calculations and explaining concepts. Therefore, it is helpful to know the keywords for explaining each concept in a standard. This can be done through looking at past paper answer schedules, and noting what words often come up in explanations. Tutoring can aid this by helping the student summarise keywords for concepts, and then practice using them in answers.
Draw Diagrams
The concepts in physics can be overwhelming to begin with and may seem quite abstract. It is useful to draw diagrams when trying to understand many of these concepts. This helps with visualizing what is occurring, and can also help visualise what you are calculating when asked to do so. Diagrams should be used when tutoring students in physics to help them understand concepts. This also allows tutors to encourage students to draw diagrams during their own study – which can be a big help.
