Our top tips to excel in Maths
Repetition of the basics
Students typically begin studying Mathematics from the earliest years of school. Each year, Maths builds upon the concepts from the previous year. Nailing the fundamental skills, for example basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) is important for students as it makes transitioning to challenging topics much easier. Repeat tasks like a 10 x 10 times table grid or 50 basic expanding single bracket questions to make these skills routine.
Ask for help
Practicing questions is most useful for testing and developing understanding, not for initial learning. To gain understanding, you should first learn the content by having it explained to you or reading about it. Afterward, you can solidify your knowledge by completing questions that assess your understanding, especially those you find challenging. The most effective way to improve in maths is to first learn new concepts or revisit old ones thoroughly and then test and develop your understanding.
Practice NCEA style questions
Tip number one was all about nailing the basics and once you have done this you should apply these fundamental skills to NCEA style questions. You can access these on both the StudyTime NZ and NZQA website. NCEA exams have a particular style of questions which is seen year to year. Students need to feel comfortable with these types of questions as these are the style they will be asked in their exams. Set a timer for 55 minutes and try to attempt a full practice exam from a previous year in exam conditions (no notes, no help, and no distractions). This should give the student a good indication of where they are currently sitting.
