Our top tips to excel in Maths
Interpreting the question
Maths questions often come down to how you interpret what the question is asking. Not reading the question properly or misunderstanding what it’s asking is often a huge problem for students. Students need to break the question down into categories of what it is asking them to do, what information is given, and then work out how they are going to get from information given to an answer. One-on-one tutoring can help a great deal with this as a tutor can demonstrate this process using examples the student understands and relate it back to the way the student thinks.
Focus on understanding
Mathematics is such a varied subject with a vast number of applications. This means you can’t memorise the answers in maths. Students need to understand the processes involved, what they do, and why they do that so that they can apply those concepts to answering questions they’ve never encountered before. A tutor is a fantastic aid for this, as they can assess a student’s current understanding and gaps in their knowledge and help explain difficult concepts in ways that relate to the student. This means the student can gain confidence in their ability to answer unexpected questions and show their understanding in more difficult questions to gain those higher grades.
Practice, practice, practice
Maths is a skill. Like playing the piano, or learning how to swim, how much practice you put in directly influences your ability. Knowing where to direct this practice can often be the hard part for students – it’s important to make sure they know the fundamental basics, but also that they’re challenging themselves and focusing on content they don’t know. A tutor can help guide students where to direct their practice by assessing where their strengths and weaknesses are and giving appropriate advice for efficient practice and study – helping the student achieve better grades by making good use of that practice.
