Our top tips to excel in Maths
Check the context of the question
NZQA can be sneaky and often ask questions in long word problem format. In many cases, students may reach a solution that doesn’t fully address the question. This is especially important for merit and excellence questions. Additionally, they also need to remember to add the appropriate units and give an explanation for discounted solutions or rounded answers.
Use diagrams and drawings
Many aspects of math can be better understood when they are put into a visual format. This might be drawing out a parabola equation, or doing a rough sketch of the fence outline they are constructing. Drawings are a great way to lay out all the numbers that have been given and start to see how everything might fit together.
Mark your answers
Students might think they understand a concept and will therefore not be checking their answers against the marking scheme to ensure they have everything needed for full marks. Mistakes will happen and it is important they go through the process of learning from these mistakes and ensuring little slip-ups, with negative numbers for example, are not repeatedly occurring.
