Our top tips to excel in Maths
Understanding is crucial
The key to doing well in Maths is to understand the rules rather than just ‘learn’ them. Memorising steps and equations will only help you with questions that you’re familiar with. All the hardest questions that offer higher grades will be unlike these standard questions, so you need an understanding of what’s really going on to tailor your usual methods and to combine your usual methods to fit those scenarios.
Questions are there to test you - not teach you
Practicing questions is mostly useful to test and develop understanding. Start by learning the content through explanations or reading. You should challenge yourself by completing a range of questions, particularly the ones you find challenging. The effective way to get better at maths is first to learn new concepts or learn old concepts more thoroughly, then to test and develop your understanding.
Do exam questions in your own order
The best way to do questions in an exam is in your own order, you don’t have to just go one by one on every question in the test! Skip the questions you can’t do first and come back to them later. Why? When you try really hard on a difficult question, you’re in focused mode and even after you decide to move on and leave that question for later, your brain keeps working on that problem in the background. This means there are areas of your brain that are unable to focus on the next question.
