Our top tips to excel in English

Structure and formulas

It is very important to transform big muddles of ideas into clearly structured and paragraphed essays, reports or responses. For example, when writing an essay, ask yourself what your three main points are and create separate mind maps for each one, even if the essay is one you have already finished so that you can make sure you know what you’re talking about and are not going off-topic.

Reading and analysing unfamiliar texts

A good habit to get into early in the school year is reading and analysing short poem, fiction or non-fiction pieces every week. The more content you consume and the wider variety of texts you can think deeply about, the greater your analytical skills will be by the time exams come around. Reading behind, between, and beyond the lines of texts is a skill set that is applicable not only to school but to university and life as well!

Proofread their own work to check for spelling and grammar

Many students do not proofread their work before handing them in. It is very important that they allocate enough time to review their work and ensure that spelling, grammar, and their ideas are correct. One recommendation is to read the work aloud to a parent, friend, or tutor, as we often overlook mistakes when mentally reading
