Our top tips to excel in Economics

Economics as a tool

NCEA Economics concepts can often be so simplified as to become meaningless and many of the graphs and ‘laws’ don’t reflect real human actions. Realise that Economics is just a tool to help us understand really complicated concepts and that much of NCEA Economics acts almost as a metaphor. It is good to discuss where these concepts fit within reality and where they don’t as it gives you a broader and deeper knowledge of the content.

Learn beyond the content

Economics is everywhere and there are a million different ways to learn more about it. Consider exploring podcasts, YouTube channels, books, articles, and other resources. Even if it isn’t directly applicable to your exams, this knowledge will always be important. Remember: The purpose of studying economics is not to acquire a set of ready-made answers to economic questions, but to learn how to avoid being deceived by economists.

Feeling confident with the graphs

It’s important to be fully confident with the graphs in order to understand the content. Make sure to spend a generous amount of time understanding what each curve represents, how they move, and what they can tell us; this includes Deadweight Loss, Surpluses, and Equilibrium/Disequilibrium.
