Our top tips to excel in Chemistry

Key ideas and definitions

Chemistry is highly content based and there are many theories involved. The most crucial step is to have a confident understanding of all the theories and how they all link together. The most important things will be in relation to bonding, electron configuration, physical properties and the different kinds of reactions. For example, understanding in organics all of the reactions and how they link together.

Test yourself with past papers, then mark it yourself

An excellent way for students to understand the structure of how they will be tested on content is using past papers. However, it’s also important that they mark their answers using the marking schedule so they can model their answer to best suit the NCEA examination. As a result, they’ll have a good understanding of what level they’re at as well as the extra information they might be missing in their answers.

Breaking down complex questions into manageable chunks

Almost every student shudders to hear the word organics. However, this is one of the most straightforward topics. The key to mastering a topic is to break down each reaction in the reaction map and ensure students have a solid understanding of it. Additionally, practice drawing and naming molecules to familiarise themselves with the structure and properties that frequently appear in exam questions.
