Tom’s story
Tom’s tutor helped him gain the confidence to ace his exams. He became a tutor so he could help his students feel the same way.
Tom talks about his journey with Inspiration Education:
“There were lots of gaps in my knowledge, tutoring really brought me through”
Tom first became involved with IE getting tutoring for Chemistry in his final year of high school. “I was really not confident with what I was learning, and there were lots of gaps in my knowledge. Tutoring really brought me through”.
Tom wasn’t exactly a bad Chemistry student – but he did worry a lot – which would affect his performance within the subject. He said tutoring helped him gain the quiet confidence to tackle his assignments and tests with a healthy attitude. “I was just kind of being told that I knew the things that I was going to be tested on, like ‘ok, this is the stuff that’s going to be in the exam, it’s not going to be anything out of the blue, you got this.”

“Tutoring helped me realise that I can pretty much do anything, as long as I’m motivated and work on it in my own time”
Tutoring helped Tom to gain new strategies and approaches to many aspects of his life. Now studying a Bachelor of Science at Victoria University, he continues to use the skills he learned in tutoring in his assignments today. For example, breaking overwhelming tasks into smaller micro-goals. “Tutoring helped me realise that I can pretty much do anything – as long as I am motivated and if I work on it in my own time. Bit by bit, I can apply it to a lot of things.”
Tom used to get pretty stressed about his exams, but it was great to have someone there to calm him down and reinforce his sense of confidence. He recalls a time his tutor baked cookies for him because he was feeling panicked about exams, and brought them to their lesson together. “It’s an awesome feeling. It’s like ‘oh they care about me enough to make these for me, maybe I will be alright.”
“You can always relate to the person that’s tutoring you”
Once Tom finished high school, he became a tutor for Inspiration Education alongside his University degree. He says he was inspired by this feeling to help other students find their own sense of security in their studies: “I wanted to become a tutor because I wanted to make students feel confident in themselves so that they could actually achieve their goals.”
Tom says Inspiration Education is an appealing company for students because of the young, approachable nature of the tutors. “You can always relate to the person that’s tutoring you. They’re not too much older than you, and you can actually have normal conversations with them without anything feeling too stilted.” As a tutor, Tom also finds this rewarding because it allows him to share his passion for Science and Maths in a more personalised context.

“It’s really trying to help students”
However, he does caution parents opting for tutoring as a “band-aid” fix to big problems. “Sometimes it’s hard to get people enthused by it if they really do not want to be there, because their parents are forcing them to go there. So I think it’s really important to get that relationship with your student going, getting them wanting to come to the lessons, so that they can actually pay attention and absorb the things you’re saying.”
The best thing about Inspiration Education as a tutoring company for Tom? “I like how it’s really trying to help students. There’s not really any other incentive – it’s all for trying to help students achieve their goals and make it through school well.”
